How Often Should You Change Your HVAC Filter?

A neglected filter like this chokes airflow and drives up your energy bills.

A dirty filter is the single most common cause of HVAC problems we see in Triad homes — and it is the easiest one to prevent.

The short answer

For most homes, replace a 1-inch filter every 60–90 days. Bump that to every 30–45 days if you have pets, allergies, or run your system hard through a Carolina summer. Thicker 4- to 5-inch media filters can last 6–12 months.

Why it matters so much

When a filter clogs, your blower has to work harder to pull air through it. That drives up your energy bill, freezes up AC coils, and shortens the life of expensive components. A $15 filter protects a system worth thousands.

Which MERV rating should you use?

MERV measures how much a filter captures. For most homes, MERV 8–11 is the sweet spot — good filtration without choking airflow. Going much higher without the right system can actually restrict air and strain your equipment.

A simple reminder system

Write the install date on the filter edge, or set a phone reminder each season. If you hold a used filter up to a light and can't see through it, it's overdue.
