Common Furnace Noises — and What They Mean

A gas furnace in a home
Some furnace noises are harmless; others signal a problem worth a fast look.

Furnaces aren't silent, but new or louder noises are your system trying to tell you something. Here's how to read them.

Banging or booming on startup

Don’t ignore this one. A delayed boom when the burners light can mean dirty burners or a gas issue — and it stresses the heat exchanger. Get it checked.

Squealing or screeching

Usually a blower motor or belt issue. It often means a bearing or belt is wearing out — cheaper to fix early than after it fails.

Rattling or vibrating

Could be a loose panel or screw (minor) — or a failing motor or cracked component (not minor). If tightening panels doesn’t stop it, have it looked at.

Clicking that won’t light

Repeated clicking without ignition usually points to the ignitor, flame sensor, or gas supply — a common no-heat repair.

Any new smell with the noise

Safety: a noise plus a gas or burning smell means shut it off and call right away — and if you smell gas, leave first and call your gas utility. See emergency service.
