Use this quick calculator to get a rough idea of the AC size — in tons and BTUs — your home may need. It's a helpful starting point, but the only way to size a system accurately is a Manual J load calculation, which we run free with every replacement estimate.
Air conditioner capacity is measured in “tons” (one ton = 12,000 BTU/hr of cooling). A common starting point is about one ton per 500–600 square feet, then adjusted for sun, insulation, ceiling height, and how tight the home is. Bigger is not better — an oversized AC short-cycles and leaves your home humid. For the full breakdown, read What Size AC Do I Need?, and when you're ready to budget, see our AC replacement cost guide.
